Camp Like a Pro with Matt Segal

Professional climber, cook, and National Geographic Explorer, Matt Segal, shares his tips for camping (and eating) like a pro.

How Matt Segal gets set to camp

 SAVE TIME WITH MEAL PREP

Prepare meals in advance to save time and reduce stress. Pre-marinate meat and chop vegetables before leaving home. For longer trips, freezing meat ensures it stays fresh until the last days of camping.

DON’T SKIMP ON THE GOOD STUFF

Like food, obviously. Quality meals are essential for a great camping experience. And so is a comfortable sleep set up, like a durable camp pad. There’s nothing worse than bad food and a bad night’s sleep.

 STAY CAFFEINATED

Always bring enough coffee, essential for catching the sunrise, staying warm, or getting energized for the day’s adventures. Use a small hand grinder and AeroPress for car camping, or a high-quality instant coffee, like Alpine Start Foods, for lighter packing.

 NEVER FORGET, NEVER FRET

Make sure to bring baby wipes for quick clean ups, spare batteries to keep your devices running, and trash bags to help you leave no trace.

 ALWAYS CHECK AHEAD

Check the weather to pack and prep for the conditions, be aware of fire bans to stay safe, and try to avoid overcrowded areas to truly disconnect from it all.
