How to Position Traeger Grill Grates for Best Results

TFB93RLG_Ironwood XL_Lifestyle_014

Many Traeger pellet grills come with the option of positioning the grill grate or grates in different positions. Because the grills cook with convection—a built-in fan blows the smoke and hot air around the closed grill—most foods will cook about the same and in about the same time no matter where they are positioned. There are, however, some subtle differences that occur depending on how high or low the grate is set. Here’s how to best position grill grates to get the best results.

For Searing: Lowest Grate Position

Many of Traeger’s newer grills, including new Ironwood and Timberline models, were designed with two bottom grate positions so users can adjust the grates according to the results they are trying to achieve. The lower position is closer to the radiant heat and so is best for high-heat needs such as searing and quick grilling. Pro tip: When you want a good sear, be sure to preheat the grill fully so that the grate is as hot as can be.

For Smoking: Position Grates Higher

The higher of the two lower grate positions is perfect for low-and-slow cooking because it’s somewhat removed from the direct heat source and the greater distance between the grate and the heat shield allows the smoke to circulate better around the food. Pro tip: This is also the best position for most baking.

Remove and Add Grates as Needed

Many Traeger grills come with additional upper middle and upper grates to increase the overall capacity of the grill’s cooking surface. (You can find the capacity of each grill, such as the 12 whole chickens the Timberline XL can cook at one time, on each grill’s info page to learn more; look here to start.)

Prop tip: When cooking something tall, such as beer can chicken, you will want to remove the upper grate or grates to allow for more room.
